“Tareekh Peh Tareekh…”: Chief Justice’s Sunny Deol Moment On Adjournments

Earlier today (November 3), CJI DY Chandrachud, in a sombre context, referred to a rather famous dialogue from the 1993 Bollywood movie Damini as he asserted his point in court.

The evergreen “tareekh pe tareekh” line referenced by the CJI, was spoken on screen by actor Sunny Deol. According to the sources of Live Law report, CJI DY Chandrachud asserted today how the court would not be a “tareekh pe tareekh court”. This was in reference to the increasing number of adjournments being requested by lawyers over urgently listed matters, brought to court on their behest.

CJI said, “On the one hand matters are listed on expedited basis, on the other hand, they’re mentioned, then they get listed and then they’re adjourned. I request the members of the bar to not seek adjournments unless really really necessary. This cannot become a tareekh pe tareekh court. This defeats trust of citizens in our court.”
