Omicron scare: Security tightens after Sec 144 imposed in Mumbai till New Year eve

The fear surrounding the spread of the Omicron variant has prompted local administrations to tighten their COVID-19 norms during the upcoming festival season, and the authorities of Mumbai have decided to follow a similar suit.

The total Omicron cases now have shot up to 32 with four new cases being reported – two from Osmanabad and one each from Mumbai and Buldhana.

The Mumbai Police has extended the 144 CrPC by another fortnight. “Section 144 will be imposed from 0001 hrs of 16 December and will be in force till 2400 hrs of 31 December,” states the order signed by deputy commissioner of police (operations) Chaitanya S.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation is also planning to have extra vigilance.

“The order shall came into force in the areas under the control of commissioner of police, Mumbai, with immediate effect from December 16, 2021, and will remain in force till 24.00 hrs of December 31,” it stated.

Mumbai on Wednesday added 238 new coronavirus cases, which took its infection count to 7,65,934, the city civic body said. As no death due to the virus was reported during the day, the city’s death toll remained unchanged at 16,360, it said.
