Jalpaiguri, Mar 29: A man has been awarded death penalty for brutally killing his cousin in public after he rebuked him for harassing a young woman. The Jalpaiguri court passed the verdict in a case from Shantinagar area under Bhaktinagar police station.
According to reports, Shankar Das and Suresh Roy, residents of Shantinagar in Rajganj block, were cousins. Suresh was allegedly harassing a young woman living near Shankar’s house. When the woman’s family complained, Shankar rebuked Suresh for his actions.
Later, after the young woman got married, Suresh attacked his elder cousin Shankar in March 2021. He lynched him in public, stabbing him 18 times with a sharp weapon to ensure his death.
The case went on in court for four years, with 12 witnesses testifying. After hearing both sides, Additional Third Court Judge Biplab Roy on Saturday pronounced the death sentence, terming the case as ‘rarest of rare’.
