Boston Scientific and Apollo Multi Specialty Hospitals will train surgeons on laser techniques

Boston Scientific, a leading US-based medical solutions innovator, is partnering with Apollo Multi Specialty Hospitals in Kolkata to offer training to doctors in laser and transoral surgery. The inaugural ‘Global Mentorship Programme for Advanced CO2 Laser and Transoral Surgery’ workshop, was held on July 29 and 30, 2023, under the guidance of Dr. Shantanu Panja, an internationally acclaimed ENT specialist at Apollo Hospitals. CO2 Laser Surgery is a highly specialized technique used for various cancerous and non-cancerous diseases, particularly the voice box or larynx.

The goal is to train surgeons from various parts of the country and abroad to start laser surgical services in their home institutes, helping more people lead cancer-free lives. Eight candidates, including faculty members from AIIMS, B Borooah Cancer Institute, Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, PRM Medical College and Hospital, Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, have been selected for the first training workshop.

Dr Panja, said, “Modern treatment is moving in a direction where post-treatment quality of life is as important as the cure of the disease. Especially in case of head and neck cancers, newer tools help us to carry out minimally invasive surgeries where there is function and organ preservation with better cosmetic outcome and normal social life.”
