11 dead, including 7 children, as building collapses in Mumbai’s Malad

At least 11 people, including eight children, died late on Wednesday after a residential building collapsed on another structure at a slum in Mumbai’s Malad area. Seven others were injured in the incident.

A three-story dilapidated building collapsed following heavy monsoon rains in the western Indian city of Mumbai, killing at least 11 people and injuring seven others, police said.

Dozens of rescuers were clearing the debris to find any residents possibly still trapped, police officer Ravindra Kadam said.

Heavy monsoon rains during the day flooded several parts of the city that is India’s financial and entertainment capital.

Officials said that more people could be trapped under the debris. They said search and rescue operations were underway.

“Total 18 injuries were reported, of which 11 people were brought dead,”a doctor from a hospital in suburban Kandivali told media.

Reports said the building collapsed around 11 pm, following heavy rainfall in the city during the first day of monsoon.

The BMC shared an update on the search and rescue operation by the fire brigade in the building-collapse at Malvani Gate No. 8, Malad (W) last night. “A portion of 2nd & 3rd floor of a Ground + 3 residential building collapsed on the adjacent G+1 floor chawl injuring 17 people,” it said.

“The search and rescue operation by the fire brigade is still going on. As per updates, 11 people have been reported dead so far. Our prayers for the affected families. We hope for the quick recovery of the injured. May the deceased rest in peace,” the BMC said in a tweet on Thursday morning.

The injured persons have been shifted to BDBA hospital. Another three-story adjacent structure to the collapsed building is in a dangerous condition and has been evacuated, the BMC has said, as per reports.

In 2019, a three-story building collapsed in a hilly area in the northern Indian town of Solan following heavy rains, killing 14 people. A four-story building collapsed in Mumbai the same year and killed 10 people.
