When everything seems normal: Unexplained infertility on the rise, warns Siliguri fertility expert

A growing number of healthy couples are struggling with infertility despite normal reports, according to Dr Shraddha Tripathi Bichpuria, Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, Siliguri. In a recent awareness note, Dr Bichpuria highlighted the rise of unexplained infertility—a condition affecting nearly 30% of infertile couples globally.

“Everything appears fine—regular cycles, clear scans, normal hormone levels—but conception still doesn’t happen,” said Dr Bichpuria. Often, the issue lies in subtle or undetected factors such as sperm DNA fragmentation, tubal blockages, mild endometriosis, or autoimmune conditions that regular tests miss.

Modern lifestyle and environmental conditions further complicate fertility. “Air pollution, endocrine-disrupting chemicals in food packaging and pesticides, and chronic stress or poor sleep can reduce reproductive health without showing up in standard check-ups,” she added.

In Siliguri, clinics like Birla Fertility & IVF are seeing a steady rise in cases where couples with no obvious medical problems seek advanced diagnostics. Demand for procedures such as IUI and IVF is increasing, with patients actively seeking early consultation to avoid delays in treatment. Dr Bichpuria advises couples to seek expert help if conception doesn’t occur within 12 months—or 6 months if the woman is over 35—emphasizing that unexplained doesn’t mean untreatable.
