WhatsApp comes out to prevent the spread of misinformation

The safety of their users is at the core of everything WhatsApp does. WhatsApp is an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services in preventing abuse and promoting online security. While there is no single action that can help prevent the spread of misinformation and fake news online, WhatsApp has made significant product investments that empower users to stay safe while communicating with their friends and family.

WhatsApp issued some tips for users to ensure that they take control of their safety on the platform: (a) Group privacy settings, (bi) Forward limits and additional limits for viral messages, (c) Block Users, (d) Report Spam and (e) Fact check news on WhatsApp. WhatsApp encourages users to double-check the information that sounds suspicious or inaccurate. In India, there are 10 independent fact-checking organizations, all certified by the International Fact-Checking Network that help to identify, review and verify misinformation through a WhatsApp chatbot.
