West Bengal: Six people died after drinking country liquor in Howrah district

6 people died and quite a few fell ill allegedly after consuming country liquor from a hooch den in West Bengal’s Howrah district, a police officer said on Wednesday.

While the motive behind the death is yet to be ascertained, the police have arrested liquor shop owner Pratap Karmakar.

A number of people fell ill after ingesting the country liquor on Tuesday night time in the Malipanchghora area, the officer said.

“Most of those who fell ill were hospitalized and six of them died this morning. We are ready for the post-mortem examination file to ascertain the cause of death. We have arrested the shop owner and sent alcohol samples from there for chemical testing,” the officer said.
A few others were said to be in “critical” condition.

The authorities have sealed the shop.
