US says, NATO will act if Russia hits alliance members

White House country wide security adviser Jake Sullivan says Russia will face a response from Nato should any of its attacks in Ukraine pass borders and hit contributors of the safety alliance.

Russian missiles on Sunday struck a army training base shut to Ukraine’s western border with Nato member Poland and killed 35 people.

Sullivan tells CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that President Joe Biden “has been clear ordinarily that the United States will work with our partners to safeguard each inch of Nato domain and that capacity each inch.”

Sullivan says a naval force attack on Nato region would cause the conjuring of Article 5. That requires other nations in Nato to come to the protection of the attacked nation. Sullivan says “We will carry the full pressure of the Nato alliance to bear in responding.”

Sullivan says Nato would answer regardless of whether a shot through Russia that hit Nato region used to be unplanned.
