UK Faces Worst Teacher Shortage in 15 Years

The UK is experiencing a severe teacher shortage, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Government data from 2024-25 shows only 52% of target teacher recruitment was met — the lowest in over a decade.

Reasons for the crisis include increased workload, burnout, and comparatively low pay. Schools are struggling to fill vacancies, especially in rural and disadvantaged areas. The National Education Union has called for immediate measures, including pay hikes and reduced administrative burdens.

To tackle the problem, the UK government announced a £30 million recruitment plan targeting international candidates, particularly from India and Bangladesh. The move has been welcomed by many aspiring educators from South Asia, where UK teaching jobs are seen as both prestigious and well-compensated.

If unresolved, experts warn the teacher shortage could impact student outcomes and worsen inequality in the education system.
