Toyota Kirloskar Motor drives ‘Green Wave Initiative’ with Miyawaki afforestation

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is ramping up its environmental commitment with the ‘Green Wave Initiative’ during this year’s Environment Month. As part of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, TKM distributed over 7,000 saplings to employees, advancing its goal under the ‘Establishing a Future Society in Harmony with Nature’ challenge. Employees are actively engaged in planting and nurturing these saplings, promoting community involvement in green initiatives. Since adopting the Miyawaki Method of Afforestation in 2009, TKM has transformed 112 acres of its Bidadi facility, fostering a biodiverse ecosystem with 790 native species. This method, known for its carbon sequestration capabilities, has captured 30.86 tons of carbon per acre, contributing significantly to environmental restoration.

Mr. B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President & Director of Manufacturing at TKM, highlighted, “Our sustainability efforts, aligned with Toyota’s Global Environmental Challenge 2050, go beyond product innovation to encompass comprehensive environmental stewardship.” TKM’s Ecozone, a 25-acre environmental learning center within its Bidadi plant, serves as an educational hub for environmental conservation, attracting over 42,000 students and stakeholders. It showcases dense forests cultivated using the Miyawaki Concept across various forest types and thematic parks.

Looking ahead, TKM aims to expand its green initiatives across its supply chain, promoting afforestation and sustainability practices like the ‘No Plastic’ campaign and water conservation efforts. In Imphal, market sentiment towards TKM’s environmental initiatives reflects growing awareness and appreciation for corporate sustainability efforts. Community leaders and stakeholders welcome TKM’s proactive stance in promoting green practices, foreseeing positive impacts on local environmental consciousness and economic resilience.
