The significance of absorbing the right nutrients to support childhood growth

Parents worldwide are concerned about their children’s growth, particularly in terms of height and weight. When children fall behind, it can be linked to lifestyle factors such as dietary habits and physical activity, leading to malnutrition such as stunting, underweight, and wasting. The World Health Organization 2022 report shows that 149 million children under 5 years of age are too short for their age, with India accounting for nearly one-third of the global childhood stunting burden.

Stunting has long-term effects on individuals and societies, including poor cognition, educational achievement, lost productivity, and negative impacts on overall health. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to immune deficiencies, compromised cognitive function, behavioral problems, diminished bone health, and decreased muscle mass. Dr. Subhasis Roy, a consultant pediatrician at Columbia Asia Hospital, says, “According to the state level NFHS report 2019 2020, while 33.8 percent of the children under the age of 5 are stunted 69 percent children are anaemic.”

A combination of a balanced diet, nutritional supplement drinks when necessary, and engaging activities can empower children to reach their developmental goals and unlock their full potential. Nutritional supplements can play a dual role, either bridging nutritional gaps or enhancing the absorption of vital vitamins and minerals from regular food consumption.
