The National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), which was launched at Mintokgang on December 14 by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, aims to encourage active and healthy aging by offering high-quality, reasonably priced healthcare that is suited to the particular requirements of the elderly population. Among other dignitaries, Health and Family Welfare Minister GT Dhungel attended the launch. A comprehensive and integrated strategy is ensured by the NPHCE initiative’s alignment with the goals of the Social Welfare, AYUSH, and National Rural Health Mission (NHM) agencies. There are now 20 beds in STNM Hospital’s dedicated geriatric wards and 10 beds in each of the district hospitals.
For older and retired patients, specialized outpatient departments (OPDs) will provide screening, investigations, rehabilitation, and other critical medical services. Through the distribution of medical equipment including wheelchairs, hearing aids, and glasses—facilitated in partnership with NHM and Social Welfare programs—mobility and independence for older adults will be given priority. By educating medical professionals in thorough geriatric assessment and treatment, the program also places a strong emphasis on capacity building.
Multispecialty health camps at district hospitals provide free medications and services to the aged as part of community involvement events like the yearly International Day of the aged in October. The initiative offers home-based care and teleconsultation services at Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and Sub-Health Centers (Sub-HCs) to increase access to healthcare. Furthermore, wellness initiatives and awareness-raising efforts will promote healthy aging while giving family caregivers the tools they need to properly care for their loved ones.
