Study links inability to stand on one leg for 10 sec to high death risk

Middle-aged people who can’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds have a higher risk of losing their lives within a decade, a new study claims.

Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine links the inability to balance on one leg for 10 seconds to nearly double the chance of dying from any cause over the next 10 years compared to those who choose to stand unsupported.

Considering the results of the study, researchers led by Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo from Rio de Janeiro suggest that balance needs to be a part of movement checkups in older people.

The study was conducted on 1,702 people between the ages of fifty-one and seventy-five who were followed up between 2008 and 2020 for the study.
