Student protest against Assam government

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has opposed the Assam government’s move to teach mathematics and science subjects through English medium from class III to class X in all government schools in Assam.

All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Assam Sahitya Sabha opposed the move.

The student body added, “Teaching science and mathematics in English will pose a threat to the Assamese language,”. ABVP demanded the withdrawal of the government’s decision.

The regional party, Raijor Dal, said the move would reduce the relevance of Assamese and other local languages of the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Saturday said those opposing the move must give an affidavit that their children will not attend English medium schools.

He urged these organizations not to play with the sentiments of ordinary people for their personal purposes.

The Assam Cabinet has approved that henceforth both subjects will be taught in English in all government schools from Class 3 to Class 12 instead of the current practice of teaching them in Assamese, Bodo or Bengali.
