Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has announced a special initiative to enhance the city’s safety by surveying all rented houses. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb made the announcement after the municipal corporation’s board meeting on Saturday.
According to the mayor, a large number of people are coming to Siliguri from outside every day, many of whom stay in rented houses for short periods of time. In many cases, these houses are being rented out without proper documentation or agreements, posing potential safety hazards and legal risks for property owners.
To address this concern, the municipal corporation will deploy a dedicated team to visit all rented properties and collect detailed information. Mayor Deb clarified that no additional tax will be levied under this initiative. The move is only to strengthen the city’s safety.
He further said that like hotels, the tenants’ information will also be shared with the police and municipal corporation to maintain proper records. A joint meeting will soon be held with the police and other concerned departments to implement this system effectively.
