Teachers in Sikkim embarked on a journey to unlock the hidden potential of mathematics through an immersive Vedic Maths Workshop, a pioneering collaboration between the Vedic Maths Forum India and the Samagra Shiksha, Education Department, Govt. of Sikkim. From 12th to 14th February 2024, educators from diverse educational institutions converged at Sir Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School to explore the ancient yet cutting-edge techniques of Vedic Mathematics. The workshop, designed to infuse excitement and innovation into the teaching of mathematics, showcased the practical applications of Vedic Maths, an ancient system originating from the Indian subcontinent. Through dynamic sessions, interactive activities, and expert guidance, teachers discovered the art of mental math, transforming mathematical challenges into opportunities for growth and understanding.
Mr. Gaurav Tekriwal, renowned for his expertise in Vedic Mathematics and President of the Vedic Maths Forum India, expressed his enthusiasm for the workshop’s impact. He emphasized, “Our collaboration with the Samagra Shiksha, Education Department, Govt. of Sikkim, marks a significant step towards democratizing access to Vedic Maths. It’s not just about computation; it’s about nurturing a love for numbers and fostering critical thinking skills.” The workshop curriculum delved into a spectrum of mathematical concepts, from basic arithmetic to advanced calculations involving percentages, fractions, and more. Participants were introduced to ancient mathematical sutras (formulae), unveiling the elegance and efficiency of Vedic Maths in simplifying complex operations.
Smt. Tseringkee Chingapa, CEO of the Gangtok District Education Department, applauded the initiative’s potential to revolutionize math education in the region. She noted, “Vedic Maths offers a refreshing approach to learning, dispelling the fear of math and inspiring confidence among students and teachers.” Shri Milan Subba, State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha, highlighted the workshop’s role in fostering a holistic learning environment. He remarked, “By integrating Vedic Maths into our educational framework, we empower teachers to unleash students’ mathematical potential, promoting a culture of curiosity and exploration.”
