In a significant advancement for animal husbandry in Sikkim, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the state’s Animal Husbandry Department, has successfully launched the A-HELP training programme. This comprehensive 16-day initiative, conducted at the Sokeythang Training Centre, aims to empower Pashusakhis—community-based animal health workers—with crucial skills and knowledge to support livestock farmers across the state.
The training, which ran from July 31 to August 16, 2024, involved 25 dedicated Pashusakhis from the Sikkim Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM). Participants engaged in extensive orientation sessions, practical demonstrations, and hands-on practices covering animal handling, housing, and ration balancing. The programme also included field visits to prominent locations such as the Gaushala at Mamring, Singhari Goat Conservation Farm, and the Sikkim Milk Union, enriching their learning experience.
The valedictory ceremony on August 17, 2024, was attended by key dignitaries, including Dr. Sharman Rai, PD cum Secretary of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Dr. Anand Thapa, Principal Director, and other senior officials from the Animal Husbandry Department, SRLM, and NDDB Anand Gujarat.
This innovative programme is set to revolutionize the animal husbandry sector in Sikkim by equipping Pashusakhis with essential skills to enhance livestock health and welfare. By bridging the gap between veterinary officers and farmers, the A-HELP initiative promotes sustainable and effective animal husbandry practices, aiming to improve the overall livestock management in the state.
