In a significant development, recently Pradhan Nagar police have arrested four individuals in connection with the suicide of Bappa Barman, a youth from Devidanga in Siliguri. The arrested accused include deceased Bappa Barman’s girlfriend, her mother, father, and elder sister, who have been charged with abetting the suicide. Actually among those arrested is Hari Sharma, the girl’s father and a member of the Matigara Panchayat Samiti. In fact the incident traces back to a love affair between Bappa Barman and Hari Sharma’s minor daughter. On Tuesday, Bappa and his girlfriend had a dispute at Milan More. Later that evening, Hari Sharma and his daughter reportedly confronted Bappa at his house and allegedly slapped him in front of everyone. Actually deeply hurt by the incident, Bappa committed suicide that night, with his body discovered hanging from a noose on Wednesday morning.
The discovery of Bappa’s body actually triggered unrest in the area, leading to an angry mob ransacking Hari Sharma’s house and attacking a police vehicle. Authorities managed to control the situation, and the police have since detained the involved parties, launching an investigation into the case. On Thursday, the girlfriend’s mother, father, and elder sister were actually presented in Siliguri court. The girlfriend, being a minor, is set to be produced in juvenile court and is currently held in a remand home.
