On view of the post-poll violence the Union home ministry of India has approved ‘X category’ security cover for all the 77 newly-elected BJP MLAs in West Bengal. With the BJP alleging that the state administration and police were not doing enough to control instances of post-poll violence, and given the heightened threat perception of BJP MLAs, the home ministry deemed it necessary to extend Central protection to the BJP MLAs until at least May 15.
Meanwhile, the home ministry is yet to receive the State government’s report on alleged post-poll violence in and the actions taken to bring it under control. It has been nearly a week since MHA called for the report, followed by a reminder on May 5.
