Members of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Manipur state branch on Wednesday staged a hunger strike in Imphal in protest against mixopathy.

The hunger strike staged in Imphal’s IMA complex was a part of a nationwide protest by doctors against permission to Ayurvedic doctors to conduct surgeries.

IMA Manipur state branch observed the hunger strike as part of the all India relay hunger strike launched by the IMA starting from February 1. The strike will continue till February 14.

The protest was staged to show doctors’ resentment and for the withdrawal of the gazette notification by CCIM (Central Council of Indian Medicine) whereby an AYUSH doctor is allowed to pursue surgery.

The CCIM, in its notification, allowed AYUSH doctors to pursue 48 different surgeries like amputation, cataract, cholecystectomy, tonsillectomy and various complicated surgeries) after a two-year training and MS (Tantra Shalya).

IMA, the largest association of modern medicine doctors in the world strongly protested against this highly unethical step of the government of India, president of IMA Manipur state branch Dr Shyamkumar Laishram said.

“It will put the health of the general public to great risk, the president who took part in today’s hunger strike said.

He alleged that instead of authorising AYUSH doctors to pursue the surgery, the government should explore ways to increase the infrastructure and also increase the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats.

“IMA strongly feels that Ayurveda should be encouraged to develop its own way and stop mixing Ayurveda and allopathy which will spell disaster,” he added.

The president informed that the relay protest will be continued by the RIMS and JNIMS and other private medical clinics of the state in the coming days.

Polypathy should be encouraged but IMA strongly feel that Mixopathy should not be encouraged, he added.
