Siliguri, May 19: A group of lawyers on Monday protested in Siliguri demanding construction of a new court building. The protest coincided with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the city to attend a business meeting with industrialists at Deenbandhu Manch.
Siliguri Bar Association members, who led the protest, said the demand for a new court building has been pending for a long time. They alleged that despite repeated appeals, the administration has not taken any concrete steps. The protest was aimed at drawing the chief minister’s attention to their long-standing demand.
Upon learning about the protest, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb rushed to the spot and assured the lawyers that a new building would soon be constructed in the Siliguri court complex. He said discussions would be held with Law Minister Moloy Ghatak and the Siliguri Bar Association to take the matter forward.
