To address natural disasters, the Indian Army’s Eastern Command has developed an Advanced Flood Monitoring System (AFMS) in response to the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that struck Sikkim’s Teesta River region in October 2023. This innovative system has gained national acclaim, earning recognition at Inno Yodha, a prestigious competition for defence and disaster management solutions.
The AFMS, designed by the Trishakti Sappers under the guidance of Hav Suresh PK of the Engineer Regiment, plays a crucial role in early disaster detection and response. The system provides real-time water level monitoring and sends early SMS alerts to officials and residents, facilitating swift action to mitigate the impact of potential floods.
Utilizing cutting-edge technology, the AFMS integrates a microcontroller, UV sensor, GSM module, and the SONAR principle, ensuring precise and timely warnings. This combination of technologies offers an enhanced ability to track water levels and detect anomalies in the environment, providing a significant advantage in disaster preparedness.
