On Tuesday, India and the Maldives signed six agreements to expand cooperation in various key areas with Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing that New Delhi is and will be the “first responder” to any need or crisis faced by the island nation.
After visiting Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Modi announced a Line of Credit of USD 100 million (one million = 10 lakh)for the neighboring country for the completion of development projects in a time-bound manner.
“We today reviewed projects of 4000 social housing units in Greater male for the construction. I am pleased to announce that we will provide financial support for an additional 2,000 social housing units,” he said in his media statement.
“We have decided to provide an additional line of US$ 100 million credit to complete all the projects within a specified period,” he added.
The Prime Minister said that the threat of transnational crime, terrorism and drug trafficking in the Indian Ocean is serious and close India-Maldives relations are important for peace in the entire region.
He said the India-Maldives partnership is not only serving the interests of the citizens of both countries but is becoming a source of peace and stability for the entire region.
