In the 2017 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party swept to power with a massive majority. The party gained 312 of the 403 seats in the legislature. The saffron party is optimistic about a return in the next election, buoyed by its performance in the 2019 general elections, when it won 62 of 80 parliamentary seats, 9 less than in 2014. Early next year, the country’s most populous state will hold elections.
