Recently Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) continues its crackdown on unauthorized constructions. On Thursday, following a directive from the Supreme Court, the SMC demolished a two-storey building in Bhanu Nagar area of Ward No. 43. Reportedly, the demolition actually targeted a structure built without any approved plan by Santosh Sah, a resident of Bhanu Nagar. In fact the issue was initially brought to SMC’s attention through a complaint, which subsequently led to a legal battle in the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of Kolkata High Court. On June 11, the bench ordered the demolition of the illegal construction.
In response to the Circuit Bench’s order, the SMC team moved to carry out the demolition. However, Santosh Sah actually contested the order and sought a stay from the Supreme Court. After this the Supreme Court reviewed the case and upheld the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench’s decision, rejecting Sah’s plea for a stay. Consequently, on Thursday, the SMC team proceeded with and completed the demolition of the unauthorized structure.
