HCG Cancer Centre, Kolkata, has achieved a significant milestone by performing Eastern India’s first robotic Whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy) surgery on a 60-year-old male patient. This pioneering procedure solidifies the center’s position as the only facility in the region to offer both traditional and robotic versions of the Whipple surgery. The operation, led by Surgical Oncologist Dr. Sujoy Kumar Bala and his expert team, highlights HCG’s commitment to medical innovation.
The patient, diagnosed with periampullary cancer, benefited from robotic assistance, which allowed for smaller incisions and enhanced surgical precision. Dr. Bala noted, “The robotic system’s 3D view facilitated superior accuracy, leading to fewer complications and a quicker recovery.” Remarkably, the patient was discharged just eight days post-surgery, showcasing the benefits of this advanced technique.
In Kolkata, the successful implementation of robotic surgeries at HCG Cancer Centre represents a transformative shift in cancer care. It positions Kolkata as a hub for advanced medical technology, attracting patients seeking innovative treatment options. Prateek Jain, Regional Business Head, emphasized the hospital’s mission to leverage cutting-edge technology to improve clinical outcomes and enhance patient experiences in the competitive healthcare landscape.
