The Government of Sikkim’s Urban Development Department has released new guidelines for how bars, pubs, and discotheques should operate throughout the state. The notice, which was released on Wednesday, aims to control nightlife and maintain public safety and is consistent with recent declarations made by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The new regulations mandate that all of these facilities shut down by 11 p.m. Additionally, it is completely forbidden for students in uniform and anybody under the age of 21 to enter. Reducing underage drinking and upholding state excise rules are the goals of the action.
The notice made clear that no bar or restaurant is allowed to provide alcohol or liquor to anyone younger than 21 or to students wearing uniforms. Establishments that are discovered to be in violation of these guidelines will be subject to severe penalties. A fine of ₹50,000 and the suspension of commercial licenses are possible outcomes of breaking these regulations. Under Section 13 of the Sikkim Trade Licence and Miscellaneous Rules, 2011, trade licenses may be completely canceled in extreme circumstances, the notification said. The public’s response to the state government’s decision has been conflicting. Some locals and parents have praised the effort as an essential measure to safeguard children, but others in the hospitality industry have voiced worries about how it may affect company operations.
