The Gauhati High Court has issued notices to the West Bengal Chief Secretary and the Kolkata Police Commissioner for alleged non-cooperation with the Assam Police in executing a non-bailable arrest warrant against the Kolkata-based political commentator.
The commentator, Garg Chatterjee, made some objectionable remarks against Swargadeo Sukafa, who had been the headquarters of the Ahom dynasty in Assam some 800 years ago. He later apologized unconditionally on the social media platform.
The Crime Branch of the Assam Police registered a case against the commentator in October 2020, and an advocate named Banasree Gogoi later filed a petition in the High Court in the case.
Issuing observations after hearing the case on June 15, the bench of Justice Suman Shyam gave six weeks to the West Bengal Chief Secretary and Kolkata Police Commissioner to respond.
Assam government tips had earlier told the court that two separate non-bailable arrest warrants had been issued against the commentator and some other characters in West Bengal with the help of a Guwahati court. But they should not now due to lack of cooperation from West Bengal Police.
