Siliguri, May 30: In a major development, the Pradhan Nagar police have in detention four people in connection with the suicide of Bappa Barman, a youth from Devidanga, Siliguri.
The arrested accused include deceased Bappa Burman’s girlfriend, her mother, father and elder sister, who have been accused of abetment of suicide. The girl’s father and Matigara Panchayat Samiti member Hari Sharma is also among those arrested.
This incident is related to the love affair between Bappa Burman and the minor daughter of Hari Sharma. On Tuesday, there was a dispute between Bappa and his girlfriend at Milan turn. Later that evening, Hari Sharma and his daughter allegedly confronted Bappa at his home and allegedly slapped him in front of everyone. Hurt by the occurrence, Bappa committed suicide the same night; his body was found hanging on Wednesday morning.
The discovery of Bappa’s body sparked unrest in the area, leading to an angry mob vandalizing Hari Sharma’s house and attacking a police vehicle. The authorities managed to control the situation and the police have taken the parties involved into custody while starting an investigation into the matter.
Today, the girlfriend’s mother, father and elder sister were produced in Siliguri court. Being a minor, the girlfriend will be produced in the Juvenile Court and is currently kept in the remand home.
