Food Safety Department conducts inspection drive in Siliguri, issues warnings and seizes LPG cylinders

Siliguri, June 05: The Food Safety Department, along with officials from Bhakti Nagar Police Station, Ashighar Outpost, Enforcement Branch and Fire Department, conducted a coordinated inspection drive in Siliguri on Thursday. The drive was conducted from Baneshwar More to Ashighar More along the Eastern Bypass.

During the drive, various hotels, restaurants, sweet shops and fast food outlets were inspected. Sweets were found kept in the open at a sweet shop and cleanliness standards were reportedly poor. A notice was issued against the shop and action has been ordered.

The officials also found the use of harmful food colours in several eateries, following which immediate warnings were issued and such substances were banned. Additionally, three domestic LPG cylinders were found being used illegally at a hotel at Ashighar More and were seized on the spot.

The Food Safety Department has directed all food shops to ensure hygiene and serve fresh, quality food. Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against violators. The Darjeeling District Food Safety Department has confirmed that such inspection drives will continue in the coming days.
