Flipkart Foundation and SankalpTaru Foundation have announced a collaborative effort to restore the mangrove ecosystem in the Sundarbans. The ambitious project, dubbed the ‘Community-Based Mangrove Plantation and Restoration,’ aims to plant 35,000 mangrove saplings across 6 acres over the next three years.
Targeting the districts of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas, this project will not only enhance coastal protection, water quality, and biodiversity but will also benefit over 5,000 marginalized individuals reliant on climate-resilient agriculture and aquaculture. The initiative will involve the planting of saplings in the first year, followed by two years of maintenance to ensure sustainability.
Puja Trisal, Director of the Flipkart Foundation, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “By restoring the mangrove ecosystems, we are mitigating climate change impacts and empowering local communities with economic opportunities.”Apurva Bhandari, Founder of SankalpTaru Foundation, highlighted the ecological benefits, noting, “This partnership creates a thriving green wall, protecting the delicate ecosystem and providing benefits such as carbon sequestration and shoreline stabilization.”
