On Tuesday, Lok Sabha MPs flagged that over 11.4 lakh cases are pending in family courts across the country and called for their speedy disposal.
The matter came up during the Lok Sabha debate on the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which was moved for consideration by Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Participating in the discussion, Janata Dals'(United) Kaushalendra Kumar said the number of pending cases in family courts is increasing and is more than 11.4 lakh. He called for speedy disposal of the cases.
“There are 715 family courts in 26 states and union territories in the country…. Parliament is supreme in changing and enforcing laws but courts will interpret them. Which court will decide which application is retrospective should also determine,” said Bhartrihari Mahtab of Biju Janata Dal.
Along with this, Sunita Duggal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said more appointments should be made to family courts so that cases are disposed of quickly.
