Millions of mobile phone users are being warned about a potential text scam dubbed “Super Saturday”.
The BT-owned EE network said cybercriminals may try to take advantage of busy last-minute shopping periods to issue delivery-style scams, suggesting parcels are waiting to be dropped off or that they have missed delivery.
These tactics can trick recipients into clicking on links that could unwittingly install malware (malicious software) or lead them to a phishing page aimed at collecting personal and financial data.
EE said it was able to block around 3 million SMS scams that went to customers’ phones on December 23 last year.
The company expects to stop up to five million such scams this month. It also said it has blocked more than 45 million scam texts so far in 2023.
EE said in a statement: “The most common SMS scams in December are delivery-related, as shoppers rush to organize last-minute parcels for the holiday period.
“These include missed delivery or track delivery text scams, which entice customers to click on links that open the door for criminals to steal consumer data or money.”
