Prime Minister Modi said on Sunday that Indians, along with future generations, will not forget the “dark times of the Emergency”.
Speaking on his month-to-month radio programme, Maan Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said, “Today as the country celebrates 75 years of independence and celebrates Amrit Mohotsav, we should no longer forget the dark times of the Emergency. It must not be forgotten by future generations.”
PM Modi further said, “When Emergency was imposed in June 1975, all rights of citizens were taken away. Among these rights were the right to life and personal liberty guaranteed in Article 21 of the Constitution.
“There was an attempt to suppress democracy in India then. The country’s courts, every constitutional institution, the press, everything has been taken under control,” added the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister said, “Censorship was so strict that nothing would be published without approval. Nevertheless, Indians should not lose faith in democracy. Only through democratic means, people got rid of emergency and restored democracy.
