The depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. After it forms, it may be named Cyclone Mandaus as suggested by the UAE. The cyclone is expected to move from the coast of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas of South Andhra Pradesh by December 8. During the next 48 hours, it will continue to move west-northwest.
In light of the weather system, the IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert in 13 districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday and 12 districts on Friday. Alerts have been issued in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on December 8. An orange alert has been issued forTiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Dharmapuri, and Salemon December 9.
