Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang on Monday inaugurated the first of its kind ‘Child Empowerment Centre’ at Poklok in Denchung.
The centre has been set up by Social Justice and Welfare Department under Integrated Child Protection Scheme, Northeast Now reported.
The project was supported by the State Institute of Rural Department and Panchayati Raj (SIRDPR), Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim. The Centre has been funded under Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
This centre is one of the first in the country and aims at protecting the rights of the child. The function of this centre is to encourage the child to have a safe space to express their point of view in a protected space.
This centre will also provide education and further will empower the children to select the right path.
Additionally, this centre will foster the child to actively take part in Bal Sabhas introducing them to bal panchayats and other village level event which can help shape the children’s future.
This village-level Child Empowerment Unit aims at contributing towards the well-being of the children by guiding in various factors like counseling, rehabilitation and developmental support thereby creating mass awareness on child protection.
This centre will highlight the effective, preventive and responsive measures by highlighting children’s voice to be one of the major policymakers of the state hence establishing a child-friendly space.
