Cipla’s breathefree monsoon yatra launches nationwide to combat respiratory challenges

As the monsoon season sweeps across India, bringing much-needed respite from the summer heat, it also presents significant challenges for those with respiratory conditions. Recognizing the heightened risk during this period, Cipla has launched the Breathefree Monsoon Yatra, a nationwide initiative aimed at improving respiratory health through increased screenings and awareness. The Breathefree Monsoon Yatra, part of Cipla’s ongoing commitment to proactive patient care, will see over 4,000 camps conducted across the country over three months. These camps will screen more than 350,000 individuals for chronic lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

India faces a rising health crisis with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) accounting for about 60% of all fatalities, with chronic respiratory diseases among the top three. Early detection and intervention can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life; however, the majority of asthma and COPD cases remain undiagnosed. Alarmingly, about 70% of individuals with severe asthma symptoms and up to 98% of COPD cases go undiagnosed, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness, detection, and management efforts.

Dr. Soumya Ghosh, Consultant Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist from Siliguri, underscores the importance of this initiative. “The monsoon season brings numerous triggers, including heightened humidity, mold, cold air, and a greater risk of viral infections. These factors pose significant challenges for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions,” he said. “Initiatives like the Breathefree Monsoon Yatra are crucial in providing timely screening and counseling on disease management, especially during high-risk seasons.”The situation in Siliguri, a key market in the region, exemplifies the necessity of such initiatives. With its humid climate and increasing urbanization, Siliguri sees a higher prevalence of respiratory issues during the monsoon. The Breathefree Monsoon Yatra aims to address these challenges head-on, offering vital support and resources to those affected.Cipla’s Breathefree initiative has long been a cornerstone in supporting asthma and COPD patients through comprehensive resources, including screening, counseling, and treatment adherence. The Breathefree Monsoon Yatra extends these efforts, ensuring individuals have access to the necessary information and tools to manage their respiratory health year-round.
