Can’t ask journalist not to write: SC in bail to Mohammed Zubair

The Supreme Court has granted Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair bail in all cases filed against him for allegedly derogatory tweets. The court ordered the immediate release of Mohammad Zubair from custody.

The Supreme Court also directed that all FIRs filed against Zubair in UP be transferred to the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, which is investigating a separate case related to an allegedly offensive tweet against a Hindu deity he posted in 2018.

The court rejected the UP government’s plea to restrain the docket Mohammad Zubair from tweeting and said, “How can we say that? It’s like asking an attorney not to argue…a man or woman now not to speak. Whatever he does, he will be responsible in regulation but we can’t ask a journalist no longer to write.”

The Supreme Court said that the petitioner will be released on bail challenge on a surety bond of `20,000. Applicant can also add Chandoli FIR.
