Siliguri, March 19: Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police have arrested two men from Siliguri for duping people of lakhs of rupees by luring them with investment schemes through WhatsApp groups. The accused have been identified as Anand Samanta alias Sagar, 22, and Anup Saha, 21.
According to reports, Sahil Agarwal (24), a resident of Salt Lake in Kolkata, had lodged a complaint at the Bidhannagar police station on October 11, 2024, alleging that he had been duped of Rs 92 lakh. He claimed that he was added to a WhatsApp group where he was promised high returns on investments. However, after depositing the money, he did not receive any returns and the amount vanished.
During police investigation, it was found that the cheated amount was transferred to another bank account. The Bidhannagar police traced several fake mobile numbers and email IDs used in the fraud and had earlier arrested a youth named Deep Barui in connection with the case. Anand Samanta’s name cropped up after questioning Deep Barui. After further investigation, the Bidhannagar police, with the assistance of the Pradhan Nagar police station, arrested Anand Samanta and Anup Saha on Tuesday. On Wednesday, both the accused were produced in a Siliguri court and taken to Bidhannagar on a three-day transit remand.
