Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on July 28 decided that mathematics and science will be taught in English in all government and provincialized Assamese and other local medium schools from the next academic year.
Raijors Dal party president Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday staged a sit-in protest demanding the rollback of the state government’s decision to teach science and mathematics in English in local schools from Class 3 onwards.
Along with it the leadership of Assam Sahitya Sabha (ASS), Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) decided to submit a joint petation to the Chief Minister with their demands.
Another student body, Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) also opposed these decisions of the government.
The decision to teach English in regional schools and not to provincialize any school in the future is directly related to the future of Assamese society,” Gogoi said.
He demanded that a special session of the Assam Assembly be convened to discuss these issues and urged the state government to organize a conference inviting all stakeholders to discuss the issue.
He also highlighted the recent statement of state health minister Keshav Mahant that medical course books are being made in Assamese language for the benefit of students.
