Assam Govt. 5% of tea garden land to be allowed for various other purposes

The government of Assam has allowed up to five percent of the total area of ​​tea plantations to be used for eco-friendly tea tourism, green energy and animal husbandry as well as cultivation of agricultural crops.

In an Ordinance the State Government amended the Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holding Act 1956.


It said, “Lands provided for the above mentioned purpose shall not exceed 5% of the total gardens,” said adviser Bidyananda Barkakoti.

There are also over 10 lakh tea workers in the organized sector in Assam, working in about 850 large estates. The state produces about 55% of India’s tea.
