Assam cabinet passes indigenous status for five Muslim communities

“The Cabinet has determined to provide indigenous reputation to five communities. They are Goria, Moriya, Deshi, Julah and Syed. People from these 5 Muslim communities will be categorised as Assamese Muslim sub-groups or indigenous Assamese Muslims,” State Health Minister Keshav Kumar Mahant gave this order to reporters.

Tuesday’s move cames after final month’s announcement via chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that the nation authorities would take steps for separate classification of indigenous minorities in the state, along with Muslim communities.

At the time, the CM had said the pass used to be necessitated to become aware of those humans from minority communities who have now not migrated to Assam and are original residents of the region.

“We are a microscopic minority in Assam and have now not been getting any advantages regardless of being indigenous human beings of the state. Today’s selection is a historical one for us and will pave the way for a separate census of our communities,” Nekibur Zaman, a member of the Goria community advised the dignitaries.

Tuesday’s improvement comes as a fresh political flashpoint in the state. Recently, after the Assam authorities determined to supply minority certificates to Muslim, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis, the Congress alleged that the move was an strive to divide the Assamese society.
