ArcelorMittal commissions 1GW renewable energy project to power AM/NS India’s green steelmaking drive

ArcelorMittal has commenced power supply from its 1GW hybrid solar and wind project in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant step in its sustainability roadmap. Developed by AM Green Energy, a wholly owned ArcelorMittal subsidiary, the $0.7 billion project will deliver clean energy to AM/NS India—ArcelorMittal’s 60:40 joint venture with Nippon Steel—supporting decarbonisation of its Hazira steel plant in Gujarat. The project, featuring 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines across 3,100 acres, will generate 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours annually, reducing carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes per year. Integrated with a hydro pumped storage solution (to be commissioned by June 2025), the plant will provide 250MW of round-the-clock renewable power, covering over 20% of AM/NS India’s current energy requirements.

In Kolkata, the development is seen as a benchmark for the eastern region’s steel and manufacturing sectors, which are increasingly evaluating clean energy integration to meet ESG goals. Analysts anticipate heightened interest in renewable energy investments from regional players, potentially influencing energy sourcing models and green steel adoption across industrial clusters in West Bengal.

This project is the first of ArcelorMittal’s global 2.3GW renewable pipeline, targeting $1.9 billion in incremental EBITDA by 2027.
