Airtel Payments Bank has made significant strides in enhancing banking access in West Bengal and the Northeastern states by establishing over 80,000 banking points, primarily in remote areas. This initiative has transformed financial inclusion for communities, particularly in 22,000 villages that previously lacked banking services. The Bank employs more than 9,000 women business correspondents, fostering gender equality and empowering local residents to manage these banking points. With services including Aadhaar Enabled Payments, insurance, and government pension schemes, villagers can now avoid the hassle of traveling long distances or keeping cash at home.
Siliguri is particularly promising, as the Bank has opened dedicated banking points within tea gardens, allowing workers to manage their salaries effectively. By enabling tea garden employees to access banking services on-site, Airtel Payments Bank not only simplifies wage payments but also encourages savings and financial literacy among workers.
According to Anubrata Biswas, MD and CEO of Airtel Payments Bank, “Our efforts focus on taking banking closer to the people and empowering local communities.” This initiative aims to reshape financial accessibility for millions while generating job opportunities across the region.
